This Weekend in Portland: 4.10 – 4.12
With the overwhelming bounty of amazing things happening in Portland on any given weekend, sorting through it all to find the perfect activities to fill our invaluable free time can be taxing. To help make your planning a little easier, we’ve put together a list of the things we think are most worthy of your time.
[clear]Friday, 4.10 – Dance Yourself Clean at Holocene – 21+, 9pm, $5 (link)
Forget Tinder for a night and step outside of the hermetic constraints of modern technology’s stronghold of your love life. Every second Friday at Holocene, Dance Yourself Clean provides lust-seekers with a real-life opportunity to twerk on a strangers face/groin without having to swipe left and right for hours to find a match. Have a few cocktails, enjoy the dance music inspired by LCD Soundsystem, Phantogram, CHVRCHES, Miike Snow, Haim, Empire of the Sun and many more… and get your grind on.
Friday through Sunday, 4.10-12 – 51st Annual Portland Swap Meet at the Expo Center – all ages, $7, (link)
If you haven’t experienced the glory that is a swap meet, then the Portland Swap Meet is definitely a good place to start. You never know what you’ll find at a swap meet — I’ve found some sweet camera lenses, cool old microphones, and some incredible deals on records. Basically, if you want to make a deal with someone, head down to the Expo Center this weekend and see what you can find.
Friday through Sunday, 4.10-12 – Italian Film Festival of Portland at 5th Ave Cinema – multiple showtimes, free (link)
Throughout the month of April, this collection of five new Italian films tours various US cities to celebrate Italian-American culture. This weekend, they make their way to PSU’s 5th Ave Cinema, one of the best independent theaters in town (not to mention one of the best kept secrets). Whether you’re into romances, dramas, or comedic crime capers, there will be a good variety of films showcased. Immerse yourself in some modern Italian cinema this weekend.
Sunday, 4.12 – The BIGGEST Clothing Swap in the Northwest at Crystal Ballroom – 11am, all ages, $8 advance or $10 at door (link)
Got a bunch of clothes that you don’t wear anymore (but that are obviously still fucking rad because your taste is impeccable)? Well then, you might want to consider making your way to the Crystal Ballroom this Sunday to swap some of your old duds for someone else’s. Consider it a more personable version of a thrift store — or like, hundreds of thrift stores all trading inventory with each other. Whatever you consider it, it’s sure to be a good time; just make sure to check the rules (i.e. don’t show up with a bag full of underwear, dummy).
Sunday, 4.12 – WAND and Vexx at Doug Fir – 21+, 9pm, $10 advance and $12 at door (link)
Producing a blend of heavy prog, sludge metal, and at times the dreamy production qualities of Tame Impala, Los Angeles psych wizards, Wand, who are on tour in support of the brand new sophomore release, Golem, will play Dante’s Sunday night. Playing support is Olympia’s female fronted power punk rippers Vexx. This is one of those shows you wish were on a Friday/Saturday night, but, employers should rest assured knowing that your hangover is from a worthy cause.
