This Weekend in Portland: 5.29-31
With the overwhelming bounty of amazing things happening in Portland on any given weekend, sorting through it all to find the perfect activities to fill our invaluable free time can be taxing. To help make your planning a little easier, we’ve put together a list of the things we think are most worthy of your time.
Friday – Máscaras and Y La Bamba House Show – 8-10pm, All Ages, Free
Some say that the house show scene in Portland isn’t as strong as it once was, but we think those folks might have just gotten too old or boring to be in the know on such matters any longer. Underscoring this fact, there is actually a German TV show focusing on house show culture in Portland, and will be filming the Máscaras and Y La Bamba show Friday night. There couldn’t be better acts to more accurately represent this city.
Friday – The Incredibly Short Film Festival at the Bob White Theater – 8:30pm, All Ages, Free, (link)
.gif animation is a true modern marvel in response to society’s increasingly short attention spans and duller sensibilities. But god damn can they be funny! Friday night the historic Bob White Theater will host a night of moving art clips from artists both local and international in what may well be the world’s shortest film festival. This event is free for the public and made possible by Awesome PDX, a local organization offering monthly $1k grants to the most awesome applicants.
Saturday – Nuggets Night (Benefit for Rock N Roll Camp for Girls) at Mississippi Studios – 8pm, 21+, $10 advance or $12 DOS, (link)
Say man, you got a joint? Uh no, not on me… But I’ll probably have one at Nuggets Night! In celebration of the ultimate 60’s psych rock compilation, Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era, 1965-1968, some of Portland’s modern era psych heads will come together to cover tunes off the timeless weirdo box set albums. Bands contributing songs include The Verner Pantons, The Pynnacles, Paradise, Cool Whips and many more. All proceeds go to the very awesome non profit Rock N Roll Camp For Girls.
Saturday – Bicycle Swap Meet at PAZ PDX – 11am, All Ages, Free, (link)
Try to ignore all the recent “if it bleeds it leads” headlines about bicyclists and cars. We all know it can be dangerous out there and we’ve gotta watch out for ourselves. But when the sun is shining, it’s biking season baby. If yer new to town and looking to get fixed for summer cruising, or just tired of your old wheels and looking to swap em out for something fresh, swing by the bike swap meet at local workshop collective PAZ PDX Saturday morning/afternoon.
Sunday – Landlines, Gothic Tropic, and Faux Science at Rontoms – 9pm, 21+, Free, (Link)
The last minute addition of Gothic Tropic to the bill on this week’s Rontom’s Sunday Session helped the show make my to-do list for the weekend. Nothing against Landlines or Faux Science, but an opportunity to see the lightly Afro-Caribbean and jazz infused explorative garage pop of LA’s Gothic Tropic without a cover charge is basically as good as landing the elusive free lunch.
