This Weekend in Portland: 6.5-7

With the overwhelming bounty of amazing things happening in Portland on any given weekend, sorting through it all to find the perfect activities to fill our invaluable free time can be taxing. To help make your planning a little easier, we’ve put together a list of the things we think are most worthy of your time.

Friday – Smmr Bmmr Fundraiser Show with Mope Groves, Psychomagic, Mall Caste, Ladywolf and Lo-Fi Eyed at The Twilight Cafe – 8pm, 21+, $6, (link)

This friday night the Twilight Cafe will play host to a fundraiser show for Smmr Bmmr 2015, which is coming up on it’s ninth year in local ripping DIY music festival history. With a bill this stacked full of lo-fo, grunge, slacker, psych goodness, you can garan-damn-tee a sweaty rumpus of a time on this mid-70 degree evening. This show is worth well more than the $6 cover, especially as a fundraiser event. Might I suggest donating above the cover charge?

Friday – Katie Summer Music Photography Gallery Opening at Night Light Lounge – 8pm, 21+, Free, (link)

If you haven’t seen the fantastic fine art photography of Katie Summer in some medium around town or on the interwebs, you’re either not from around here or surely living under a rock. Through the month of June, the Night Light Lounge is housing a gallery of Summer’s newest black and white prints of live music including lots of local bands and touring acts alike. For a chance to meet the lady behind the lense, drop by opening night of the gallery Friday at 8pm.

Saturday – Joel Magid & Hyenas, Ah God, and The Century at The Know – 8:30pm, 21+, (link)

Celebrating the release of his brand new single “Shame” (stream it below!), Joel Magid and his band, Hyenas, will make a 60’s psychedelic circus of the Know this Saturday night. And a helluva troupe the Hyenas are with Scott Yoder of Seattle’s The Pharmacy on lead guitar, Papi Fimbres from nearly every great Portland band on drums, Casey Burge and Lia Gist of Minden on bass and backing vocals respectively, and Jeni Wren formerly of Shy Girls on the piano. Support from good time rockers, The Century, and floral space punk cowboys, Ah God, will kindly help stir the night’s pot of conviviality.

Friday and Saturday – Jon Lovitz at Helium Comedy Club – 7:30 and 10pm, 21+, $30, (link)

You may remember him from his time on Saturday Night Live from 1985-1990 when he created some of the show’s most memorable characters, and later in films such as “Little Nicky,” “The Wedding Singer” and “A League of Their Own.” This Friday and Saturday night, timeless comedian Jon Lovitz finishes a three night residency at SE Portland’s Helium Comedy Club.

All Weekend – Goonies 30th Anniversary Celebration in Astoria – (link)

Goonies never say die! Not even after thirty years. Culminating on Sunday, June 7th which has been dubbed by Astoria’s mayor as annual Goonies day, this weekend marks the four-day thirty-year anniversary celebration of Steven Spielberg’s 1985 cult classic filmed at the Oregon coast. Activities throughout the weekend allow fans to catch screenings of the film, win a chance to go zip-lining with Jeff Cohen who plays Chunk, attend an 80’s Con and 80’s night out at various adult locations – including Fort George brewery where Truffle Shuffle Stout will be on tap. You’re not a true Oregon local if you’re not a fan of The Goonies.
