This Weekend in Portland: 6.19-21
With the overwhelming bounty of amazing things happening in Portland on any given weekend, sorting through it all to find the perfect activities to fill our invaluable free time can be taxing. To help make your planning a little easier, we’ve put together a list of the things we think are most worthy of your time.
Friday and Saturday – Jay Mohr at Helium Comedy Club – 7:30 and 10pm, 21+, (link)
Comedian Jay Mohr has been hard at work polishing his funny bone since the early 90’s. You might remember him from his stint on Saturday Night Live from ‘93-95 where he became famous for his celebrity impersonations including Christopher Walken, Al Pacino, Norm Macdonald, etc, or from his roles in films such as MAFIA! and Jerry Maguire. Catch him at Helium Comedy Club this Friday or Saturday night.
All Weekend – Collectors West Gun and Knife Show at the Expo Center – $10, (link)
For those of you who need the reminder, Father’s Day is this Sunday. What better way could there be to strengthen that father/spawn relationship than to spend a day strolling around the most American place in Portland – the gun and knife show. No need to tell your old man you love and appreciate him, take him to pick up an antique war relic, or perhaps a brand new automatic rifle and maybe a few thousand rounds, then head out to the nearest rock quarry and spend the day together being patriotic as fuck. Read our story about spending a day at the gun show if you need more inspiration.
All Weekend – Internet Cat Video Festival at Hollywood Theatre – 7:30 and 9:30pm, $8, (link)
All right, meow. I know you’re a fan of cat videos because… well, you’re on the internet. Sorry, it was an obvious give away. And since you’re a fan of cat videos, it only makes sense that you should make your way out to the Hollywood Theatre this weekend to check out your favorite felines on the big screens. Cat running into a wall, cat that can’t jump very far, baby cat getting covered up by a pillow — they’ll all be there, and so should you.
Sunday – Psychomagic and The Century at Rontoms – 9pm, free, (link)
As usual, Rontoms is a pretty safe bet this weekend. Yeah, yeah, we sound like a broken record — it seems like every weekend we’re listing Rontoms Sunday show — but you know what? You can’t beat free! And when it’s a couple acts as talented as Psychomagic and The Century… well, you’d just be a fool to miss out.
Sunday – Máscaras and Algiers at Doug Fir – 9pm, $12, 21+, (link)
We’ve been talking a lot about Máscaras lately. But we can’t stress it enough – these homies are DOPE! Last weekend they released their debut album Máscara vs. Máscara on CD (through Party Damage Records) and tape (through Resurrection Records) and have already sold out of tapes. If you haven’t had a chance to scoop one yet though you’re in luck, they’ll have another batch ready for their NW tour kick off show this Sunday night at Doug Fir where they’ll play support for Atlanta’s spooky gospel inspired Algiers.
