This Weekend in Portland: 7.31 – 8.2
With the overwhelming bounty of amazing things happening in Portland on any given weekend, sorting through it all to find the perfect activities to fill our invaluable free time can be taxing. To help make your planning a little easier, we’ve put together a list of the things we think are most worthy of your time.
Red Bull’s Flugtag Portland at Tom McCall Waterfront Park
Say what you want about Red Bull and what their chemically robust flavors may or may not do for your health, and/or the minds of youth fans of extreme activities – but you really can’t deny that the shit they get involved with is down right fuckin’ awesome. This Saturday, Red Bull brings their celebration of Flugtag (German for “flying day”) back to Portland for the first time since 2008 when they brought out some 80,000 people to witness the spectacle. Teams participating will launch their custom made flying contraptions – which some of our favorites include replicas of Portland’s infamous Rigsketball van and an Imperial Star Destroyer – off a 28 foot high flight deck into the steaming water of the Willamette River.

Hustle & Drone and Fog Father at Rontoms
There’s been a lot of hubbub flying around as of late about a recent shift in booking management at local haunt Rontoms. I tell you what though, that bar will continue to pump out some of the best fucking shows Portland has to offer regardless of what the booker’s name is. We still love you Theo! This weekend is no exception for the consistently excellent delivery of Rontom’s Sunday Sessions. Dance up a sweat to cool yourself off on this blazing Sunday evening with model boys / electro synth lizards Hustle & Drone and openers Fog Father.

Pickathon Music Festival at Pendarvis Farm
Pickathon is hands down the best music festival in the Portland area and perhaps even the whole Pacific Northwest. Located each year at the beloved and hospitable Pendarvis Farm, Pickathon offers the most unique and welcoming festival experiences possible. Three days and nights of camping with your best friends in the woods just outside of town, witnessing sets by and partying with expertly curated artists – this year such as Ty Segal, Viet Cong, Wand, Sam Cohen, DIIV, Leon Bridges, and Tinariwen, as well as local favorites Grandparents, Jackson Boone and Edna Vazquez. If you’re unlucky like me and not able to attend Pickathon this year, I am sorry. Lemons amiright? But at least there’s a live stream of the festival!
noon-2am, $270/Weekend or $100/day passes, All Ages, (link)
Rivers and Lakes of the Pacific Northwest
Alright here’s the deal. It’s going to be damn near 100 degrees outside every day this weekend. There are no reasons why you shouldn’t be out beating the heat by jumping into one of the many beautiful and frigid cascadian rivers and lakes within just an hours time from Portland. Unless you’re at Pickathon this weekend – there aren’t any rivers there. But with all the lucky bastards off at Pickathon, maybe the rivers just might be a little less crowded. Check out this awesome website with a list of Oregon’s 25 best swimming holes.

Or, still if you’re one of the unlucky ones not at Pickathon this weekend, but also not living on a shoestring budget and into quality fashion and apparel and such, you might want to check out Portland’s Biggest Summer Warehouse Sale.
