Conjuring sentiments of beach trips followed by debasing hangovers, Surfs Drugs video for “Don’t Feel Like Surfing” matches the spectral spirit of their new album Year of the Trimp, available August 28 on cassette and digitally through Nice Changes. Celebratory trumpets, thematic apathy and campy, surf riffs makes this song the anthemic “end of summer” track. Also worth mentioning, the video is fairly spot-on aesthetically, displaying Macbook psychedelics and scantily clad women being pummeled by waves.
While frontman and songwriter Berg Radin (aka “Trimp,” and member of And And And) certainly has an affinity for the more playful aspects of surf-rock, the album also displays a certain solemn tenderness perhaps absent from Surfs Drugs’ previous releases. Channeling a quiet catchiness similar to Thee Oh Sees’ “Island Raiders,” Year of the Trimp, tackles more than just the party, but the party aftermath as well.
