This Weekend in Portland: 8.28 – 8.30
With the overwhelming bounty of amazing things happening in Portland on any given weekend, sorting through it all to find the perfect activities to fill our invaluable free time can be taxing. To help make your planning a little easier, we’ve put together a list of the things we think are most worthy of your time.
Thee Oh Sees with Psychomagic at Doug Fir Lounge
Thee Oh Sees rip and everyone knows it. If you aren’t familiar with them yet, then you must not be a fan of modern rock and roll. And if you aren’t sick of them yet, then hopefully you already have tickets to their show at the Doug Fir Lounge Friday night. If not, there are still tickets available for the matinee show with the all ages crowd, or you can jump in line early to grab the the last remaining tickets for the night show that will go on sale at 7pm at the box office. There might not be a better and more intimate place to witness Thee Oh Sees live, other than maybe the barn stage at Pickathon, but a close second for sure. Local dumpster-glam rock entertainers Psychomagic open both shows.
2 Shows – 5pm, All Ages, $15, (link); and 9pm, 21+, online sales over / limited tix at door
Grilled Cheese Invitational at Eastburn
The grilled cheese sandwich: it’s a cult classic of food. If you’re satisfied by only the best grilled cheese sandwiches, you might want to check out the Grilled Cheese Invitation at Eastburn. You get to taste grilled cheeses from eight different Portland cheese grilleries (made that word up), and to top it all off, you determine who makes the best one. Participating restaurants include Zeek’s, Brunch Box, Meat Cheese Bread, and more.
5-10pm, All Ages, $20 to taste and judge, (link)
Heavy Breather Tonight! at Hollywood Theater
Dark comedy at its finest – XRAY.FM’s Heavy Breather are taking their part creepy part hilariously off-kilter radio banter to the big screen. In anticipation of the comedy duo’s forthcoming local access tv “talk show”, hosts Charlie Salas Humara and Marius Libman of Sun Angle (together), Panther and Grapefruit, and Copy respectively, will bring the weird to the Hollywood Theater this Sunday night. If Wayne’s World, Tim and Eric, and the Howard Stern show had a love child with the ghost of Eric Clapton’s son, it would probably get it’s own show on IFC like Marc Maron. Here’s to hoping Heavy Breather can do the same. The theme of their inaugural live performance Sunday night is Eroticism.
9:30pm, $5, (link)
Dogs’ Day of Summer (Featuring Wiener Dog and Pug Races) at the SE Hawthorne Lucky Labrador Pub
Okay, look… I’m normally not one to champion a myriad of loose dogs at my local drinking establishment, however, this Sunday I’ll make an exception. After all, who doesn’t love wiener dog races (or pug races for that matter)? That’s exactly what will be going down at Lucky Lab’s “Dogs’ Day of Summer” event. Wiener dogs run from 2-4 and pugs go from 5-7. And for the hour in between… pet dogs, drink beer, do what you do.
2-7pm, All Ages, Free, (link)
Support Black Restaurant Days
An event that has quickly gathered steam is “Support Black Restaurant Days”, and the weekend is finally upon us! If you’re wondering what’s near you, check out this thorough map. A few personal favorites of mine include Po’Shines, Crown Q, and Cannon’s, but, let’s be honest, you could definitely go to any of these restaurants any time you want… don’t just limit yourself to this weekend. (Oh, and do your research… some places are closed Sundays or have limited hours.)
