This Weekend in Portland: 9.18 – 9.20

With the overwhelming bounty of amazing things happening in Portland on any given weekend, sorting through it all to find the perfect activities to fill our invaluable free time can be taxing. To help make your planning a little easier, we’ve put together a list of the things we think are most worthy of your time.

Destroyer with The Domestics at Wonder Ballroom

Normally, I’m not eager to pay $20 for a show, but when the line up is as air-tight as this one, it seems like a no brainer. Local darlings The Domestics continue their run of good form (and big shows) with this opening slot for Dan Bejar’s brainchild Destroyer. Bejar is basically a modern day David Bowie, crafting timeless melodies and combining them with odd and angular lyrics. This is The Domestics last show in Portland before heading out on a month-long National tour with Blitzen Trapper. Not one to be missed.

8pm, All Ages, $20, (link)

Moon Duo, Nurses, and Spectrum Control at Mississippi Studios

What are minds for but getting bent? A best bet this weekend for stepping out of cranial normality is at Mississippi Studios Saturday night with San Francisco’s Moon Duo as they bring a haze of abysmal drone/phase psychedelia. Support from one of the city’s finest and most thoughtful experimental pop groups of the past decade, Nurses, is warmly welcomed as they’re making comeback plans with a forthcoming album.

9pm, 21+, $15, (link)

PALS Clubhouse Summer’s End Shindig with Fanno Creek, Sama Dams, + Special Guest

It’s tough to think of a house venue in town better than PALS, which probably means a house venue better than PALS doesn’t exist. In their final show of 2015, PALS will be hosting Fanno Creek, Sama Dams, and a super secret special guest. Like, seriously… they haven’t even told us who it’s going to be. That’s how secret they are. So, that probably means if you don’t end up at this show, you’ll forever rue the night you stayed home instead of going to PALS. (Side note: as far as the special guest goes, my money’s on a Michael Jackson hologram.)

8:30pm, All Ages but no underage drinking, Free, (link)

Heavy Breather Tonight Episode 2 Screening at Hollywood Theater

Portland “celebrities” Charlie Salas Humara (Panther/Sun Angle) and Marius Libman (Copy/Sun Angle) have been bitching on the airwaves of XRAY.FM for a while now about wanting their own program on IFC – since someone as dumb as Marc Maron can get a show. They’re finally taking things into their own hands however, with a brilliantly low-budget local access cable program Heavy Breather Tonight, which feels like a cross of Between Two Ferns and Wayne’s World. Join them Sunday night at Hollywood Theater as they debut Episode 2 with a theme of “Time Machine Hobo Nostradamus.”

9:30pm, All Ages, $5, (link)

All Weekend

Rose City Comic Con at the Convention Center

The only universe where you’ll find Chun-Li and Spiderman lurking in the same convention hall just so happens to be the very universe you exist in, and this weekend, that universe will come together for Rose City Comic Con. Admittedly, I’m more of a video game person than a comic fiend myself, but that’s okay as RCCC will be featuring much more than just comics, including gaming, sci-fi, anime, cosplay, and more.

10am-7pm Sat, 10am-5pm Sun, All Ages, $30/Sat $25/Sun or $50/2-day pass, (link)
