Summer is officially upon us, and for many Portlanders, there’s no better way to celebrate our typically short dry season than to hop on the ol’ two wheels and party with our pals at Pedalpalooza. Tonight (Thursday, June 9) marks the kickoff ride, leaving from the Salmon Street Fountain at 7pm (like now dude, go!), and this weekend there are a whole heap of excellent rides of varying themes. Below check out Noise & Color’s highlight of some of this weekend’s choicest looking rides. Be safe out there and fly like the wind, friends!
Led by TNR crew, except without leader Nathan Jones, of Ride Yr Bike, who is off photographing the Trans-America bike race. Get there early to snag a custom Pedalpalooza pennant.
Meets at 6pm, rides at 7. Salmon Street Fountain, SW Salmon and Naito Pkwy
Little Lebowski Urban Achievers Ride
Fans of ‘The Big Lebowski’ should enjoy this mobile re-enactment of a handful of choice scenes from their favorite cult movie. Wear a robe or sweater (you know the ones), pack a thermos full of White Russian and come check it out.
7pm. Col. Summers Park, SE 20th and Belmont, Tennis Courts
Midnight Mystery Ride
Portland’s favorite mystery ride is here. As is tradition, the starting location won’t be announced until the day of the ride, but it will almost certainly be one of the better dive bars around here. Bring cash just in case, and lovingly shush anyone who won’t pipe down with the, “Do you know where we’re going?” It’s a mystery, duh.
Meets at 11pm, rides at Midnight. It’s a mystery
Ride Leadership Ride 2
Wondering what it takes to lead a Pedalpalooza Ride? Come check out this rolling clinic and gain the skills needed to one day call yourself ‘Ride Leader’.
11:30am. NE 28th and Weidler
Grilled by Bike
It’s a ride on fire! The Grilled by Bike bike club is back, with even crazier grillbike contraptions. They’ve spent all winter welding grills to their bikes, the least you can do is bring ‘em some hot dogs to throw on. Or fruit or veggies, as this year will feature a vegetarian grill in the stable for our herbivore friends.
Meets at 2pm, rides at 4pm. Irving Park, NE 7th and Fremont
Magical Unicorn Ride
Do you identify as a Unicorn? Don your horn, sprinkle some glitter on yourself, and prance (can you prance on a bike? Such questions probably don’t worry unicorns) through the city with like-minded magical equestrians.
Meets at 2, rides at 2:15. Colonel Summers Park, SE 20th and Belmont
Bowie vs. Prince
Break out the face paint or your favorite purple outfit and come celebrate the lives of the these two iconic musicians the world recently lost. Converge en route with the separate Prince vs. Bowie Ride (that leaves from Sewallcrest Park on SE 31st and Stephens at 8pm), and roll on to a 21+ after party together as one massive, glamorous crew.
Meets at 7pm, ride at 8pm. Holladay Park, NE 12th and Multnomah
Need some speed? Come join Portland’s fastest downhill mini-bikers for 100 miles of bombing the hill. This year it will be a team relay style race, so bring some buddies. And, like, probably a helmet too, considering.
10am. Washington Park
NE Urban Goat Ride
Several of Portland’s industrious goat parents have graciously invited a pack of cyclists to come gawk at their adorable creatures. Usually I just giggle to myself about how cute they are as I ride by, this will be way better. Ride will end at Hopworks on Williams for a post-goat breakdown.
Meets at 12:30pm, ride at 1pm. Wellington Park, NE 67th and Mason
Always Sunny in Philadelphia Ride
Come for the irreverent humor, or the rum-ham, if that’s what you’re into. Prizes for the best costumes and lots of in-jokes for fans of the TV show that has found new ways to push the boundaries.
2pm. Yamhill Pub
The ride without a route. This haphazard get together meanders through portland, using chance dice throws to decide how for to go and when to turn. Who knows where they’ll end up, but there’ll probably be a lot of goofing around with bike friends on the way.
4pm. Clinton Park, SE Division and 57th Ave.
